Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a national holiday that dates back to June 19, 1865 when slavery ended in Texas. This follows a long two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day provided the news that slaves in Texas were finally free. Harriet Tubman once wrote, “I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one there to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land.” I feel as if today this quote still holds true. Although African Americans are no longer enslaved, the world is still not a place of equal opportunity. We have got to stand up and fight. We have to speak up for what we believe in and we can not let down. They will ignore us. They will deny these claims. They will try to act as if nothing is wrong, but the silence will not weaken my voice.
